Little Mermaid Cake

Kayla wanted a "Little Mermaid" Cake for her third birthday.  I wasn't up for fashioning my own Ariel, so we used one of her toy figures and set it on top of a fondant rock.  I believe we used a toy Sebastian and a little seahorse too.  We had a really fun time making up the rest of the cake with fondant.  We made a turtle, an octopus, a snail, starfish, a clam, and lots of coral.

The green spiral is made of thin strips of fondant that we twisted, once it dried it was easy to poke into the cake.
The pink coral is made up of rolled pieces of fondant stuck together like tree branches.  A dab of water at the joints gets them to stick.  I let them dry flat on wax paper, then poked a few together at different angles to get some dimension.

The girls had such fun helping design the different corals and mixing the colors.  They also helped with the octopus cupcakes.  We made them with a ball of fondant placed on top of piped legs.

Happy Birthday Kayla!
