Rapunzel Tower Cake

For her 4th birthday,my daughter Kayla wanted a Rapunzel theme.  I was inspired by a cake I found at Cake Central.  I scaled it back a little, and made a few changes to make it my own.

Ice cream cones gave me the basic shape.  Fondant is my cake coating of choice, you can make almost anything with it.  Even the kids enjoy working with it.  I used a pattern I bought at Michaels to shape the gray fondant to look like stones.

I love to use kitchen items I already have to help make different shapes.  I pressed the fondant through my garlic press to get her long yellow hair.  I used a pizza cutter to make the "wood" for the tower accents.  And dragging a  toothpick through the pieces gave them some grain.  I piped on the vines with traditional icing.

I had to cut out part of the base cake and replace it with something harder to support the tower(so it wouldn't fall through).  I used a small plastic container to set in the cake, and set the tower on top of it.  Unfortunately, it wasn't wide enough so the tower kept slowly leaning off to the side every few minutes.  Luckily, I didn't put the tower on until shortly before the party, and we made it to cake time.  I'll have to plan a little better in the future, because I ended up straightening the tower every 5 minutes.

Kayla loved her cake.
